Google's August 2026 spam update is live — third of the year, global, all languages, targeting on-page policy violations

Recovery from a spam demotion takes months and isn't guaranteed; link spam and site reputation abuse are explicitly out of scope this round, which narrows what's being swept by SpamBrain.

Why it matters: Sites with AI-generated content at scale or near-duplicate landing pages should run a spam policy audit now — SpamBrain doesn't telegraph what it targets and the rollout window is open.

ChatGPT pre-names brands from training data before any search runs — 33x citation advantage — and its retrieval fan-out just shrank from 12 to 4 queries per answer

Network traffic analysis of 60 conversations shows ChatGPT writes competitor brands from its parametric memory into its first search query before fetching a single page. Those brands reach the final answer 68.9% of the time vs 2.1% for brands only retrieved. In early August, OpenAI also cut retrieval volume from ~12 to ~4 queries per answer, compressing the citation window further for brands not already pre-named.

Why it matters: The first diagnostic for any AI search audit is: does ChatGPT name your brand in its own query? If not, citation odds are 2%, not 70%, and no content optimization addresses that gap — the fix is earned coverage in publications the model was trained on.

Google confirms eventual HTTP QUERY method support for search crawling

Gary Illyes confirmed Google Search will eventually support the HTTP QUERY method, which allows servers to handle rich filter payloads without generating crawlability-unfriendly query strings. Widespread adoption requires ecosystem-level updates (CDNs, browsers, HTML standards) — a ~2 year runway.

Why it matters: Sites with complex faceted navigation or parameterized URLs have a confirmed technical path forward. File it now; nothing changes today, but it's the right direction to design toward.
